Taste some of Greece's best food

Updated: May 7, 2023

What is Greece most famous for ? I think the answer for all food lovers is the Mediterranean diet.

Personally I think the the reason why the Mediterranean diet is so famous all around the world

is because it's not just a diet, but rather more like a way of life, a way to connect with family and friends by sharing an amazing meal made out of local fresh ingredients and lots of love.

One of the most popular Greek dishes is souvlaki, which is made with barbecued meats that are often seasoned with lemon juice. Souvlaki can be made with chicken, pork, or lamb, and it's often served with a side of Greek salad, pita bread, and tzatziki sauce. This flavorful dish is a favorite of locals and tourists alike and is often enjoyed as a quick and delicious meal.

Another staple of Greek cuisine is freshly caught fish. In Agistri, the local fishermen bring in a daily catch of delicious seafood that is often grilled or fried and served with lemon, olive oil, and herbs. It's a simple and delicious way to enjoy the bounty of the Mediterranean Sea and one that is not to be missed.

And let's not forget about tzatziki, the tangy and refreshing dip that's made with yogurt, cucumber, and garlic. This traditional Greek condiment is a perfect accompaniment to grilled meats and vegetables, and it's also a popular dip for pita bread and chips.

How do Greeks eat.. Share , share share

We Greeks like to share. Sharing is caring after all and in this case it means that you can try all the delicacies at the table. A greek table always has a salad, bread, veggies cocked in all shorts of different ways and some kind of protein ( meat, fish, legumes ect). When you are at a restaurant in Greece, don't feel obligated to order a entree, main and dessert just for your self.

Recommended traditional dishes

  • Tzatziki

  • Souvlaki/ gyros

  • stuffed tomatoes

  • mousaka

  • pastitsio

  • greek salad

  • marinated fish

  • fresh calamari

  • and the list can go on and on ....

If you are a vegan surprisingly Greece is your place

I know greeks love their meat but you will be astonished by all of the vegan dishes greeks eat everyday.

From stuffed tomatoes, to amazing legume dishes to roasted vegetables with tomato sauce and garlic, there's no shortage of flavourful and healthy dishes that are free of animal products. One vegan dish that's sure to please is dolmades, which are stuffed grape leaves that are filled with rice, herbs, and sometimes, pine nuts. It's a tasty and satisfying dish that's perfect for sharing with a group.

The Mediterranean diet, which is heavily influenced by Greek cuisine, is also known for its health benefits. The diet emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. It's a diet that's been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

In conclusion, Greek food is a delicious and healthy way to enjoy the flavors of the Mediterranean. From grilled meats to fresh seafood to vegan options, there's something for everyone to enjoy. So whether you're dining alone or sharing dishes with a group, be sure to sample all the delicious and diverse flavors that Greek cuisine has to offer.
